As leaders, among our many responsibilities, we have is to face down challenges. Then muster the backbone to the carry out the necessary actions that oftentimes are not easy. At the same time we must temper our toughness with kindness. A leader must be multi dimensional and never one sided. To paraphrase Darwin it is not the strongest but the ones who can adapt that survive.
It is important that has we adapt we are fearless has we pioneer new channels, markets and opportunities. However, that does not mean we are ever reckless. Developing a strategy and moving in to unknown territory is not the same has simply charging headlong with no plan or contingency. Bravery with no brains is not desired either.
Therefore, the thought of this week is to make sure that being fearless and being reckless is recognized as more than a mere distinction. Make sure you are fearless but never at the reckless cost of your colleagues or company. Take measures to balance your courage with great caution and patience for gathering intelligence and listening to others. Be firm in your convictions but not blind to possibility of compromise. Read the last paragraph again and measure your own performance? Challenge yourself to become better and be viewed as fearless but never reckless. Think how you can develop those in your team to become fearless and well rounded leaders. The payoff will be huge.
There has be a lot of print, media and discussion, way beyond the point of ad nauseum, dedicated to this recent phenomenon; triggering. It is the rage in academia and education in general and from my perspective doing real damage with micro aggression identification becoming a sport and not the fun kind. It appears that we are not preparing our youth for success in the world nor are we helping society in general. We can and should disagree without a triggering episode. Holding differing thoughts should be encouraged and in fact celebrated. It is time that we took back the narrative and outline what triggering really looks like in the real business world. Below are the Top 10 THINGS that SHOULD TRIGGER
10- You’re are late for an appointment or meeting
9- You not do the work
8- You do not care enough about your career or company
7- You blame others for your lack of performance
6- you approach each day has a slack day
5- You ridicule others that want to advance
4- You think others should pander to you
3- if you think that a different point of view is not normal and causes distress
2- if you believe everyone should get a medal or award merely for participation
1- you do not respect yourself or others.
At times we are so invested in our beliefs that when we hear a rumor or get an unconfirmed report that matches our thinking we want to take the new intelligence as fact. In these moments we must fight that urge and question our confirmation bias. Always get the facts. Challenge the source and make sure you remain open minded.
The times when I have miscalculated the error could easily have been avoided if I had not wanted the story to be true and therefore I allowed the story to be true.
No matter where you are in your career questioning your confirmation bias is paramount. My thought of the Week is practice this skill in your daily life.
